How Often Should a Forklift Be Serviced?

Always consult the manufacturer’s service manual for the exact maintenance schedule associated with the forklift’s brand, model, serial number, power type, and operating environment.

Daily Forklift Inspection vs. Scheduled Maintenance
A daily operator inspection and a scheduled preventive maintenance service are not the same thing.
Operators should complete a pre-operation inspection before placing the forklift into service. This generally includes checking the forks, tires, mast, chains, hydraulic hoses, controls, horn, lights, brakes, steering, warning indicators, and visible fluid leaks.
Scheduled maintenance is more comprehensive and should be performed by a qualified technician. It may include filter replacement, lubrication, fluid servicing, battery inspection, electrical testing, brake adjustment, and detailed inspection of critical mounting components.
A forklift with a condition that affects safe operation should be removed from service until it has been properly inspected and repaired.

Electric Forklift Maintenance

Lead-Acid Forklift Battery Maintenance
Lead-acid batteries require more hands-on maintenance than lithium-ion batteries.

- Checking the state of charge
- Inspecting battery terminals and cables
- Cleaning corrosion and residue
- Checking electrolyte levels
- Adding distilled water when required
- Inspecting the battery case for cracks or leakage
- Confirming that the battery is properly secured

Only distilled water should be used when topping up a lead-acid battery, and the manufacturer’s watering procedure must be followed. Battery charging and maintenance should take place in an appropriate, ventilated area with the required safety equipment.
Propane Forklift Maintenance
Propane forklifts use an internal-combustion engine and therefore require engine-related maintenance in addition to the inspections shared with electric forklifts.
Change the Engine Oil and Oil Filter
Engine oil lubricates internal components and helps manage heat and contamination. Degraded or insufficient oil can accelerate engine wear.
At the required service interval:
- Replace the engine oil
- Replace the oil filter
- Check for oil leaks
- Inspect the condition of the drained oil
- Confirm the correct oil level after service

Inspect or Replace the Air Filter

Forklifts used in dusty environments may require air-filter attention more frequently than the normal service interval.
Check Coolant and Other Fluid Levels
Propane forklift maintenance should also include checking:
